2000 Newsletter
The 1999-2000 year was a wonderful one.
Our September meeting was hosted by Melissa Cox and
allowed us to get reacquainted and meet some new sisters
in the area. We celebrated Founders Day at the
Golden Lamb with the Dayton Alumnae as well as collegians
from Miami University and University of Dayton. Mary Carr
Boyd, former Director of the Foundation and former
International President, spoke of her experiences. For
the second year, we held our November event at The Kiln,
and in December, Alice Wilson was gracious enough to open
her home for our annual holiday party and ornament
exchange.
In January, Natalie Baird, Jane Bellet, Michelle Proffitt,
Carol Glotfelter, Holli Jones, Lisa Lang, Jill Marano,
Katie Meyer and Kate OHara traveled to provide
lunch for the Gamma Nus during their rush. Phis and food
found each other again in February when Becky Ishee put
on a Pampered Chef party hosted by Carrie Fulton, and the
event raised over $100 for our group. In March, Tammy
Fales, Natalie Baird, Erin Palmer, Carol Glotfelter and
Susanne Solomon volunteered at the Mini-Marathon. Several
sisters from Gamma Nu competed in the HeartWalk while
Michelle Proffitt and Karen Wannemacher ran in the 5K. In
April, we gathered at Pyramid Hill to enjoy one of three
outdoor sculpture museums in the U.S. The tour and lunch
were enjoyed by all. Mary Ann Mangold ran our most
successful Flower Sale in recent history during May. We
sold more than $350 in flowers. Many thanks to Mary Ann
and all those who purchased flowers.
As many of you know, Carol Glotfelter has loyally served
as president of our alumnae chapter. She has worked hard
to help our chapter grow and turn into the strong group
it is today. Please join me in thanking Carol for her
dedication. Carol, we are proud to call you a sister!
Due to Carols work, as well as Elaine Kerr (treasurer),
Jane Bellet (Panhellenic delegate) and many other sisters,
we have continued to grow in the past year to 60 dues
paying members. With the help of Wendy Mennega during the
first part of the year and Erin Messersmith and Kate OHara
during the last part of the year, the Ivy Connection has
developed into an exciting group with great events
planned for this year. Elaine Kerr also organized the
Downtown Luncheon Group allowing sisters to take a break
from their jobs to have a little lunch-time fun.
It was this leadership which enabled us to be honored as
Outstanding Alumnae Chapter for the Upper Mid-West Region,
and Mary Ellen Trunick was awarded the Michelanean Award
for our region as well. We also received honorable
mentions at Convention for Excellence in Member
Recruitment and Overall Programming.
I hope you are as eager about the upcoming year as I am.
The calendar for the year is enclosed, and I look forward
to seeing you at the exciting events we have planned.
AOE,
Carrie Fulton
We received the Cardiac Care Award from
Foundation!
This year, we selected a project that will introduce
gender based cardiovascular information into the medical
students curriculum and will produce a guide for
women to use in discussing potential heart disease
symptoms with their physicians. The program will be
implemented by the Womens Health Department at UC.
You may remember that Susanne Solomon, Erin Messersmith,
Mary Ellen Trunick, Carol Glotfelter, Carrie Fulton,
Rachael Callcut, Jane Bellet and Jennifer Verkamp wrote
or reviewed our application for the Cardiac Care Award.
This year marks the beginning of a new
Executive Board. They are as follows:
President - Carrie Fulton, BGSU
VP Programming - Katie Meyer, Miami
Treasurer - Michelle Proffitt, Nwestern
Panhellenic - Christina Dennin, Miami
Ivy Connection -
Erin Messersmith, UC Santa Barbara &
Kate OHara, Miami
Please feel free to contact us. We look forward to
serving you!
The Ivy Connection has seen 8-10 women at
the past couple of events. Were excited to see this
number growing and we are looking forward to some new
activities.
On September 20, we will be going to Oxford to attend
Gamma Nus chapter meeting. We will meet at 4:00 p.m.
at the Wendys off I-275 at Colerain Avenue, and we
will stop for dinner on our way home. We will be making
another trip on November 8 - same meeting time, same
meeting location. Join us in a show our support for Miamis
Chapter.
On October, we will be getting together for a frightening
experience at the USS Nightmare, a haunted riverboat.
Meet at 7:00 p.m. outside the entrance on Thursday,
October 12. Tickets will be $10.00 at the gate. After our
tour, those who survive will head over to TGI Fridays on
the river in Covington.
This group targets women who graduated in the last 10
years but all are welcome to join in the fun. For
additional information, contact Carrie Fulton.
Jane Bellet, Duke University, served as
Vice President for the Cincinnati Alumnae Panhellenic
Association and was chairman of the Scholarship committee.
She has represented us for the past three years, and she
is now preparing to begin her medical school residency.
Jane - thank you so very much for your dedication and
work on Panhel.
We would like to welcome Christina Dennin who will be
serving as the Alpha Phi representative to the Alumnae
Panhellenic. Another notable achievement is that of
Christine Rossetti of Gamma Nu. She was awarded the
Panhellenic scholarship for the year 2000.
Interested in getting together with some
Phis for lunch? This group gets together on a monthly
basis for lunch allowing members to have a change of pace
during their day to have some good food with great women.
For more information,
contact Carrie Fulton
As our only business meeting of the year,
we need your help on September 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Carol
Glotfelters home. We need your help to eat all the
wonderful food as well as share a favorite salad or
dessert of your own. After eating, we will be discussing
the update to our By-Laws as well as our goals for the
year.
This will be a great opportunity for you to help let us
know what you are interested in from YOUR alumnae group
as well as give Carol another opportunity to put up
balloons to help us find her house.
Where we will be celebrating Founders
Day this year? You guessed it, we will be having lunch at
The Golden Lamb on Saturday, October 21 with the Dayton
Alum as well as collegian representatives from Miami and
UD. We will also be inviting the alumnae from
Indianapolis. Drinks will be served starting at 11:00 a.m.
and lunch will be served at noon.
After enjoying a lunch of quiche Lorraine and cobbler for
dessert, we will be hearing Barb Rinto of the Womens
Heath Program speak in more detail of how the Cardiac Aid
Grant will be used. Susan Barrick from the Foundation
Board will also be on hand to present the Grant.
Candles can add so much to a home! They
can also add a little to our budget too! On Monday,
November 13 at 7:00 p.m., we will be having a Candle
Party at Katie Meyers home. Plan on spending some
time with us and invite your friends to do some early
holiday shopping while helping to raise money for our
group.
Gamma Nu has had a busy year! Their
crowning moments came at Convention as they were
acknowledged for their contribution to the Foundation and
also received the Most Improved Finance Program.
The suite has also been redecorated, and all are invited
to stop in and see it. School will be starting soon, and
they have a busy schedule including helping with Freshman
Move-In. Chapter is held every Wednesday at 5:30, and
everyone is invited to visit. On November 11, the ladies
will be having their Fall Formal. Contact Carrie Fulton
if you are interested in attending.
Gamma Nu is teaming up with a fraternity for their annual
fund-raiser. They are raffling chances for a two year
lease of a 2001 Jeep Wrangler. Contact Carol Glotfelter
or for more information. A limited number of keys will be
given to winning ticket holders. You are all invited to
Homecoming on October 2. At halftime during the game, key
winners will see if they have the winning key.
We would also like to acknowledge those alumnae who have
volunteered to be the Advisory Board for Gamma Nu. Your
help is appreciated by alumnae and collegians alike:
Chapter Advisor: Karen Wannemacher, Bowling Green
Operations: Natalie Baird, Miami University
Development: Jennifer Mendelson, Case Western
Recruitment: Rachael Callcut, Case Western
