December 2001 NewsletterWe have always enjoyed our annual Holiday Party, and this year we are shaking things up a bit. Elizabeth Thornton has already agreed to host the event. We will also be having fun with ornaments, but this is where things change. We are inviting you to bring an unwrapped ornament you have made or purchased to donate to be auctioned off. The proceeds will go to our group helping us to send someone to convention. We will also be having the annual cookie exchange if you are able to bring some cookies to share. Preparations are well underway for an exciting recruitment period. International has provided some additional chapter specific support this year as well as manpower from Alpha Phi women that specialize in recruitment. This year, our alumnae group will be serving lunch (as we have for the past few years) on Saturday, January 12. The Gamma Nu's could also use some assistance for their Preference Parties on Sunday, January 20. It's not too early to mark your calendar for a trip up to Oxford for either of these events or both of them. Our collegians are very appreciative of the assistance that we provide for them! Remember to pay your International dues. Information will be sent to you directly from the Executive Office. Please also consider making a contribution to the Alpha Phi Foundation. To see what EO and Foundation have been up to visit their web site at www.alphaphi.org. This year, the Lunch Group will be traveling throughout the Tri-state. Retirees and working women are welcome as well as stay at home moms. Moms can feel free to bring your small children. Our next lunch will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 11 at the White House Inn in Tri-County. You can take a break from holiday preparations and treat yourself to a nice lunch. For more information, contact Carrie Fulton at fultoncs@yahoo.com. Turn On, the chapter's major philanthropic event, was very successful again this year. The women raised over $6,200. The final figures for the event are not available yet, but it is estimated that the 4 Greek groups involved raised over $19,000 allowing for donations of approximately $11,000 to The Oxford Community Counseling and Crisis Center and the American Red Cross. A special thank you to those of you who purchased tickets for this cause! The chapter hosted a brunch for alumnae on homecoming Sunday. Earlier in the month, Gamma Nu also hosted a Founder's Day celebration for the chapter and alumnae complete with ceremony and supper at Western Lodge. The Upper Midwest Regional Conference will be February 8-10 at the Sheraton Airport Hotel in Cleveland. If you are interested in attending, contact Carrie Fulton at fultoncs@yahoo.com to get more information. The Cincinnati chapter of the American Heart Association's annual Heart Ball will be Saturday, January 26 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. The theme is "A Russian Romance: An Affair of the Heart." Four of our sisters are involved with the fund-raiser this year: Melissa Cox, Tammy Fales, Carol Glotfelter and Mary Ellen Trunick. Tickets are $175 each with $115 of the amount as a tax deductible contribution. Please contact one of these sisters if you are interested in attending this special event that raises about $275,000 annually to support cardiac research in Cincinnati. Convention will be from June 25 to 30 at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, Arizona. The executive board will select our delegate in March. Please let Carrie Fulton know if you would like more information or would like to be considered to be our delegate! Have you ever forgotten where or when an event is? Have you ever needed a sister's address when not at your usual computer? You can easily see that information and more, including past newsletters, at site at www.cincy-aphi.20m.com. We will be electing a new executive board at our pottery painting event in March. If you are interested in serving as an officer or on the nominating committee, please contact Carol Glotfelter at glotfelter@fuse.net. The Ivy Connection has been having a ball lately. We have gotten together to visit Gamma Nu and support them as much as we are able, and we got together for dinner at Macaroni Grill in November. In February, we will be getting together for dinner at P.F. Changs in Rookwood on Thursday, February 7 at 6:30 p.m., and we have other events in the works. We will pass that information along as soon as we finalize things. This group targets women who graduated in the last 10 years but all are welcome to join in the fun. For additional information, contact Kate O'Hara at oharake@yahoo.com or Michelle Moody at mmoody@newsamerica.com. So far we have had a great year. In September, we gathered at Katie Meyer's apartment complex and discussed the chapter. We decided to contribute $25 to Foundation and to support Gamma Nu by taking them lunch during recruitment. We passed a few minor changes to the By-Laws clarifying and expanding the officers' job descriptions. The next scheduled review is in 2003. In October, we had our first Traveling Lunch Group get together at Dick Clark's American Bandstand, and it was wonderful to see some new faces. Later in the month, we were honored to have Debby Gray, Regional Alumnae Membership Coordinator, and Judy Watson, International Executive Board Member, join us for Founders' Day. We had a wonderful turnout with representation from Dayton, UD and Miami as well as Cincinnati. November found us in Hyde Park in a fun discussion about The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Of course the discussion didn't stay on the book for long as we talked about friendships and mother/daughter relationships. If you have any news to share, please feel free to contact Carrie Fulton at fultoncs@yahoo.com.
